Shakespeare Bats Cleanup
by Ron Koertge

This book is written is prose. It is an unusual read. The boy who writes the book is a 14 year old baseball fanatic. He gets mono and is forced to stay at home and rest for several weeks, which means he can't play his beloved game. His father, a writer himself, gives him a blank journal and encourages him to write since he has so much time. So he begins to write poetry, in secret and to his chagrin he begins to enjoy it. He writes about baseball, a lot about his mother who'd recently passed away and a new girl he likes at school. The scenes involving his girlfriend and her father are quite humorous.

Poetry becomes something he likes almost as much as baseball (high praise indeed). A very quick read.
