The Giver
by Lois Lowry

What would it be like to live in a strictly ruled suburban city where the government chooses your job? Jonas knows because that's life for him. (He doesn't even get to live with his real parents). During a ceremony to choose his job, he is chosen to receive memories of before the city. He decides to leave the city. After he leaves the memories are spread among the people thus re-revealing love. This is a gripping book that I recommend to older readers.

The Giver book takes place in a place where there is no color is called sameness. The main character is Jonas. Jonas received the job (actually chosen) to be the receiver of the community. The receiver receives memories from the Giver. Some memories inflict pain and some give joy and peace. Jonas has lots of sadness after he sees a release. Jonas makes the decision to run away from his community because release looked horrible to him. In the end Jonas goes through lots of suffering to run away from the community so Gabe a mear small child does not have to go through release.
