The Volcano Disaster is a fictional story about two preteen
children mistakenly going back in time to witness the catastrophic
eruption of Mt. St. Helens.
After his father
died and his mother decides to finish college, Warren Spalding
has to live with his grandmother.
Nothing in life
seems to interest Warren. At school, his grades are bad, and
he avoids his friends. His spirits don't improve when he is
assigned Betsy Tyler as a report partner.
In his grandmother's
house, Warren discovers his deceased grandfather's secret
invention. However, it unexpectedly goes off, and Warren is
sent back in time with no way to return. Betsy is left with
the device and has to save him before it is too late.
Scenes throughout
the book switch among different points of view. The plot itself
is rather impossible but enjoyable. The characters are realistic
while the descriptions, especially about the eruption, are
vivid. Peg Kehret has written many natural disaster novels,
and this one can be counted to be as exciting as the others.
