Counting on Grace
by Elizabeth Winthrop

"Counting on Grace" is a story of a young girl named Grace and her friend, Arthur, who are forced to work in the harsh conditions of a mill in order to provide money for their families. At first Grace is excited to be able to go to work like her Mamere and older sister, Delia, do, but quickly discovers that the mill is a horrid place for anyone to spend that many hours in. When Grace, her teacher, and Arthur write a letter to the National Child Labor Committee, Lewis Hine, a photographer, comes and takes pictures of Grace and Arthur and the other children at the mill to show what they suffer through every day. Mr. Hine befriends Grace, and soon she is working as his secret ally. Not only does Mr. Hine use his pictures as a weapon against the breaking of the Child Labor Laws, but he shows Grace that even she is someone he can count on.
