Earth
by David Brin

Earth is a novel set 50 years in the future. The Earth's population is past 10 billion and growing fast. New solutions must be found. Scientists are researching the science of cavitronics, producing energy from miniature black holes. One such experiment goes awry and a black hole is dropped into the core of the planet. Scans of the Earth's interior show that the singularity is losing mass rapidly, but a second black hole is located. It's a race against time to remove the black hole and find its creators.
I would recommend this book. It is suspenseful and scientifically accurate.
