Federal Censuses have been conducted every 10 years since 1790. Missouri became a state in 1821 and the first Federal Census was taken in 1830. The name of the head of the household is listed as well as the ]number of free white males and females, free "colored" males and females, and slaves both male and female. The number of individuals are listed in age categories. The 1840 census includes the same information as 1830. The 1850 census, for the first time, lists names, ages, occupations, and birthplaces of each free person in the household including free African Americans. The Slave Schedules for 1850 include the name of the slave owner along with the number of slaves owned and the number that had been freed. Although not named, each slave is listed separately, along with age, color, and sex. In addition it was recorded whether the slave was a deaf-mute, blind, insane, or idiotic and if the slave was a fugitive from the state. The 1850 census data also includes mortality, agriculture, and industrial schedules. Mortality Schedules are important for African-American researchers since they include information for each person who died during the year ending June 1, 1850, including African-Americans. The 1860 population, slave and mortality schedules include the same information as the 1850 censuses plus the name, age and sometimes birthplace of slaves over 100. Beginning with the 1870 census all American households were meant to be entered into the census. The data on each person includes, name, age, sex, color, occupation, place of birth, whether married, attending school, and whether able to read or write. Census data is available for the additional years of 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920.
