Most of the following definitions are taken from the Cyber Dictionary edited by David Morse.

Address - A combination of letters, numbers, and/or symbols that identifies a location where information is stored.

Bookmark - A computer routine that automatically links you to a network site you have already looked at.

E-mail (electronic mail) - A message sent via telephone lines and modem from one personal computer or E-mail service to another.

Home - A link or icon that returns you to the beginning of a homepage or site.

home page - The first page of a site on the World Wide Web. The term also is used to indicate that someone has a site on the Web.

http (hypertext transport protocol) - A protocol for identifying, sending and receiving Web documents. A URL beginning with http://indicates a World Wide Web site.

hypertext - A system in which documents contain links that let the user jump from one file to related information in another file without having to shut the file the user is in. WWW is a hypertext system.

Icon - A small picture or symbol representing a computer program, file, or feature.

Internet - The largest worldwide electronic network, interconnecting thousands of smaller networks and millions of computer users.

Link - A connection made in hypertext between documents.

Mailing lists - Also called a discussion list or listserve, mailing lists allow people with similar interests to communicate with one another via e-mail.

menu - A list of options displayed on a computer screen.

Newsgroup - A special interest discussion group found on the usenet portion of the Internet.

On-line - Being connected to another computer via a telecommunications link.

Search engine - Software that helps locate files on the Internet. Yahoo and Infoseek are search engines.

site - A specific location on the Internet, also called a home page.

URL (universal resource located) - Also called an address, a URL is the recognized scheme for naming a site on the Internet.

Usenet - An abbreviation for user network. An enormous and fast-growing network of newsgroups on the Internet.

World Wide Web (WWW) - The graphical lane on the information superhighway, It is called the Web because its many sites are linked together.
