John J. Buse grew up in St. Charles and worked for American Car and Foundry Company until his death in 1933. He spent much of his spare time investigating the history of St. Charles and collecting and preserving that history in photographs, reminiscences, and newspaper articles. The Scrapbooks series is made up of 41 volumes of newspaper clippings dating from 1899-1930. Topics include: city government, roads, railroads, buildings, churches, World War I, schools, disasters, crime and Prohibition.Copies of the Buse files from the Western Historical Manuscript Collection

The Draper Manuscripts are a collection of historical records of the Revolution and the Westward Expansion. They are first hand accounts from men and women involved in the formative years of the Nation. The Draper Manuscripts provide biographical data on military figures, pioneers, Native American leaders and influential families.

JOHN J. WATTS COLLECTION- 6 rolls

This collection consists of records kept by John J. Watts, a Baptist minister, during the years 1879-1912. The collection includes information on individuals living in Phelps, Pulaski, Maries,Dent, and Texas counties, Missouri. Watts moved to Missouri after the Civil War and began preaching in 1877. He was ordained in 1879. Watts traveled throughout Phelps, Pulaski, and Maries counties preaching at marriages, baptisms, funerals and meetings of local Baptist churches.


The collections consist mainly of notebooks filled with genealogical information. The majority of the entries consist of records of families in Phelps County and the areas along the Gasconade and Big Piney rivers. An index is available on microfilm.
