RECORDS OF THE CHEROKEE INDIAN
AGENCY IN TENNESSEE, 1801-1835

These rolls contain some of the earliest records listing Cherokees by name. Included are lists of: widows and children of Cherokees who died in the War of 1812; Cherokees and whites filing claims for lost property; names of Cherokees emigrating to the West.


The first 9 rolls contain papers for the years 1801-1823 arranged roughly in chronological order. Rolls 11-13 contain chiefly fiscal records.


EASTERN CHEROKEE ROLLS, 1848-1852 - 1 roll

"An act of Congress of July 31, 1854 authorized the addition of 88 individuals whose names were omitted by Siler on his 1851 census. This roll was on e of the criteria that Guion Miller used in deciding the eligibility of applicants to the Guion Miller Roll of 1906-1910.

This is a census list made of the Cherokees by Drennan in 1852


'OLD SETTLER' CHEROKEE CENSUS ROLL (1851)

This census is based on Cherokee who had migrated to the Western Indian Territory porio to the New Echota Treaty of 1835. The Payment Roll is based on the 1851 Old Settler Roll. The names of those still living in 1896 in the Western Indian Territory are listed first. A list of those who had died, their heirs, and the heir's relationship follow this list to the deceased.


The following information is included: name; 1851 roll number; age and sex; amount received; and post office address.


RECORDS RELATING TO THE ENROLLMENT OF EASTERN
CHEROKEE BY GUION MILLER, 1908-1910

These records are frequently referred to as the Guion Miller rolls. In 1906 he was appointed to determine who was eligible for funds under the treaties of 1835-36 and 1845 between the U.S. and the Eastern Cherokees. The "Guion Miller Reports and Exhibits, 1908-1910," in twenty nine volumes, includes ten volumes of transcripts of testimony arranged chronologically; a printed copy of the completed roll with supplements; and the Old Settlers roll of 1851-52 with index. The General Index to Eastern Cherokee Applications, Vol. 1 and 2 is on roll 1. Use the name index on Roll 1 of microfilm publication M1186, Enrollment Cards for the Five Civilized Tribes, to find the application # for the Miller rolls.


A typical application includes: applicant's English name; Indian name (if any); residence; date and Place of birth; marriage status; name of husband or wife; parents' names, their places of birth, residence in 1851 and dates of death; names and dates of birth and death of brothers and sisters; names of paternal and maternal grandparents and their children, places of birth and residence in 1851; name of the ancestor from whom they claimed to have descended.

This roll of microfilm serves as an index to the Enrollment Cards for the Five Civilized Tribes, 1898-1914. It can also be sued to find the application number for the Miller Rolls. It is divided into three sections; an index to the Final Rolls of Citizens and Freedmen of the Cherokee Tribe, the creek and Seminole Tribes and the Choctaw and Chicasaw Tribes.


ENROLLMENT CARDS FOR THE FIVE CIVILIZED
TRIBES, 1898-1914

The Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes (Dawns Commission) between 1898 and 1914 prepared the enrollment cards. The Commission enrolled individuals as citizens of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole tribes. The cards record information submitted by individual members of the same family or household, along with notations of action taken by the Commission. Cards are arranged numerically by census card number within each tribe. The index is on Roll 1 (M1186-1).


Information on the cards includes; name; roll number; age and sex; degree of Indian blood; and the parent's names.


FINAL ROLLS OF CITIZENS AND FREEDMEN OF THE
FIVE CIVILIZED TRIBES IN INDIAN TERRITORY,
1907-1914

This record is referred to as the Dawes Rolls. The Final Rolls are used by researchers who are trying to provide proof of Native American ancestry from one of the Five Civilized Tribes. The rolls are arranged by the name of the tribe and thereunder by; Citizen by Blood; Citizen by Marriage; and Freedmen.


The following information is usually included; name; age; sex; degree of blood; and roll and census-card number. The entries are arranged numerically in the order in which the citizen was entered. There is an index on Roll 1 of microfilm publication M1186, Enrollment Cards for the Five Civilized Tribes.

These 5 rolls contain a special enumeration taken of Indians living near military reservations in Washington, the Dakota Territories and California, on the first day of October 1880.

These files were created by the Military Division of the Missouri. They relate to Indian engagements and campaigns in the Northern and Southern Plains, Colorado and New Mexico. In addition, the files contain information on military expeditions and surveys, civil problems involving Native Americans and settlers, military reservations and posts, and on the employment of Indian scouts.


The files are arranged in three subseries; military operations arranged by geographic area; files pertaining to administrative concerns with regard to Indian scouts and military reservations; and miscellaneous subjects. Within series documents are generally arranged in chronological order.

THE TERRITORY OF LOUISIANA - MISSOURI

The Territorial Papers consist of the official records of Federal territories that became states. Documents dated earlier of later than the period of the existence of the particular territory may be included. The papers relate to the constitutional prerogatives of Congress over Territories, its power to admit new States and the right of the people to petition the government for redress of grievances. The collection includes petitions, memorials, bills, resolutions, reports from executive departments, and correspondence.


The papers are organized chronologically and contain much material on the early inhabitants of the Louisiana Territory including Native Americans. A surname and subject index is available on the roll after the introductory pages and before the text.
