CAPITOL FIRE DOCUMENTS - INDEX - 13 rolls
When the Missouri State Capitol burned in 1911 a number of documents and papers were saved and later microfilmed. These microfilm rolls serve as an index to the salvaged documents. The Missouri State Archives in Jefferson City has copies of the documents on microfilm.

These records consist of the annual narrative and statistical reports submitted by field employees. The reports provide an extensive account of the details of farm operations and rural life. There are reports from State officials, subject matter specialists, county agricultural agents, home demonstration agents, and club agents. In many counties the service had both white and African-American agents. The reports submitted by the African-American agents are a source for detailed information about conditions among the rural African-American population. The reports are arranged by year within the state.

The records pertain only to positions in the State of Missouri normally filled by Presidential appointment as follows: Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the St. Louis and Central Superintendencies, registers and receivers of public land offices, pension agents, and supervisor of the census for the 11th Decennial Census. The officials concerned with Indian administration, land matters, and pensions for veterans were employees of the Office of Indian Affairs, the General Land Office and the Pension Office respectively.


The records include letters of application and recommendation, petitions, reports, oaths of office, bonds, notices of succession, and applications for leave of absence. The records also relate to such matters as resignations, removals, and investigations of charges against officials.


The papers are arranged by title of office or position and then arranged alphabetically by the name of the individual and then by the date.

Vessel documents include certificates of registrations, enrollment and license. These documents were issued after proper measurement and proof of place and date of construction were provided. Certificates usually contain the following information:
  • Certificate number
  • After 1866, the vessel's official number and call letters
  • Names and addresses of owners
  • Name of Vessel and home ort
  • Name of master of vessel on the date of issue
  • Date and place of construction
  • Name of Builder
  • Number, place and date of issue of previous certificate
  • Number of decks and masts
  • Dimensions and tonnage
  • Type of Stern, gallery and figurehead
  • Type of rig
  • Place and date of issue certificate
