EXTENSION SERVICE ANNUAL REPORTS: MISSOURI, 1914-1944 - 29 rolls

There are reports from State officials, subject matter specialists, county agricultural agents, home demonstration agents, and club agents. In many counties the service had both white and African-American agents. The reports submitted by the African-American agents are a source for detailed information about conditions among the rural African-American population. GENERAL EDUCATION BOARD ARCHIVES:
Series I: Appropriations
Subseries 1: The Early Southern Program, 1901-1967 - 1 roll
S3298 - Roll 80, Missouri & New Mexico
The Early Southern Program of John D. Rockefeller's General Education Board (GEB) was one of the largest and best organized philanthropic efforts in the history of U.S. education. This microfilm reveals the inner workings of the GEB and shows how it aided countless African-American schools, teachers, and students. It also illustrates the problems of race relations in the early twentieth century and the efforts of leaders to overcome hostility.

INDEX TO COMPILED SERVICE RECORDS OF VOLUNTEER UNION
SOLDIERS WHO SERVED WITH U.S. COLORED TROOPS
- 89 rolls
M589
On March 26, 1863, the Secretary of War issued an order directing the Adjutant General to organize black regiments in the Mississippi Valley. On May 22, the War Department established a Bureau of Colored Troops to handle the recruitment, organization, and service of the newly organized black regiments. State designations were assigned to the regiments except in Louisiana. The regiments in that state were mustered into federal service with Native Guard and Corps d'Afrique designations. In early 1864 all regiments with State, Corps d'Afrique, or Native Guard designations were redesignated numerically as United States Colored Troops.

This index is arranged alphabetically by the soldier's surname and includes the unit, company and rank. Copies of service records may be requested from the National Archives.

TRANSCRIPTS OF THE HEARINGS OF THE HOUSE SELECT COMMITTEE
THAT INVESTIGATED THE RACE RIOTS IN EAST ST. LOUIS
- 7 rolls
1917
In 1917 there was considerable labor strife as well as racial unrest in East St. Louis, Illinois. Encouraged by employers looking for a source of inexpensive labor, many African Americans had come to the area seeking work. In April 1917, a labor union strike failed and many blamed the African American workers for the failure. On July 1, a group of armed men shooting into African American's homes sparked a race riot that left at least 48 dead, hundreds wounded and caused a financial loss totaling $493,600.

The transcripts of the investigation are arranged chronologically. They are preceded by an index of subjects and persons mentioned in the hearings.

Freedman's Savings and Trust Company Records

INDEXES TO THE DEPOSIT LEDGERS IN BRANCHES OF THE

In 1865 the company was incorporated in Washington D.C. for the use of freed slaves. There were branches in 14 states. The corporation was set up to enable freed slaves to save and invest money. The company failed and ultimately the Secretary of the Treasury appointed a Comptroller to administer the company. The final report was submitted to Congress in 1920.

The indexes include the depositors' names and account numbers, or in some cases the page numbers of the deposit ledgers. They are arranged alphabetically by the state and then by the city where the bank was located. Within the city the names of the depositors are listed alphabetically.
