Overtime compensation is paid to nonexempt employees whose work is covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). They are not exempt from the law’s requirements concerning minimum wage and overtime.
Nonexempt employees are eligible for additional pay of 1.5 times their regular hourly rate for work performed in excess of 40 hours in a work week. The Library District defines the work weeks as Sunday through Saturday.
Prior approval by the immediate supervisor is required before any nonexempt employee works overtime. Employees working overtime without approval may be subject to corrective action.
Paid time off, such as annual leave, holiday, or sick leave, are not included when determining overtime pay. Meal periods, typically 30 minutes or more, are not compensated as work time and not included when determining overtime pay.
