Section D - COLLECTION MANAGEMENTPolicy Number D040ADULT COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICYSUBJECT: APPLIED SCIENCES -- 600
Description: The library will collect books and other materials pertaining to applied sciences and technology such as medicine, engineering, home economics, business, manufacturing, furnishings, buildings, construction and carpentry. Influencing Factors: The surrounding college and university libraries are available for in-depth research. Two medical libraries associated with Saint Louis University and Washington University, respectively, are excellent resources for medical information. Retention: Currency, accuracy of content, and condition of the material will be the criteria used to evaluate the collection for retention or withdrawal of items. Current selection: Materials of varying levels of difficulty, as well as basic handbooks and manuals, will be purchased for the general, non-specialist library user. Some materials may be augmented by CD-ROM products, especially in the reference area. Retrospective selection: Materials with obsolete information or theories will be discarded; all general works which have been superseded, unless they are classics in their field, will be removed from the collection. Currency of material will be of the essence, especially when evaluating the medical, scientific and business areas of the 600s.
