Staff Training
The Library District offers many opportunities for staff training. Participation in training activities is subject to branch schedules. Generally employees should check with their supervisors before registering for training workshops.
TRAINING AND STAFFING COMMITTEE: A committee composed of staff from various branches meets on a regular basis to discuss issues related to staff and plan staff training.
IN-HOUSE TRAINING: A variety of training opportunities is offered throughout the year. Topics for workshops are chosen to reflect interests of the staff. Some examples of workshops that have been presented in the past are: CPR, Searching the Internet, Introduction to Children’s Services, Page Training, Emergency Procedures, etc.
GENERAL ORIENTATION: An 8-hour orientation program is presented periodically for new employees. The program gives an overview of the Library District’s policies and procedures, familiarizes staff with the branches and their managers, provides a tour of the administrative offices, and covers a section on customer service.
PARAPROFESSIONAL TRAINING: A formal training sequence encompassing approximately 6 months of class was implemented in July 1994. The training is a required element of the paraprofessional position and must be successfully completed by staff promoted to the position and individuals hired into the classification. Library District librarians and management staff present the classes.
WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCES: Staff who is interested in attending workshops and conferences should contact the Human Resources Office to determine availability of funds.
STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY: Periodically, the Library District will present an event for all staff. This may include an all day training, a morning breakfast event, or an evening dinner program. The District presents information in a variety of formats to keep employees current on important topics or issues of interest.
