Foundations & Charities

Introduction:
Just like researching a business, to get a well rounded picture of a Nonprofit Organization or Foundation, it is good to look at the institution's financials, funding, and programming.
  1. First use databases and directories to gather basic information on the target Foundation or Organization:

  2. Check the 990 form of the NP What's a 990? A 990 is a form that nonprofits have to file with the IRS. This file is a good way to see where a nonprofit is getting its funding from and what the Organization is spending it on. One can also use the 990 to find contact information for the organizations' board members.  One thing to note is that Organizations that make less than $9,000 do not have to file a 990 with the IRS, and therefore may not be listed.

For more information read "How to Read the 990 form" by the Nonprofit Coordinating committee of New York http://www.npccny.org/Form_990/990.htm

  3. To get the 990 file search by Organization or Foundation name in the following databases:

  4. Check local newspapers for events or other information related to the Organization:

  5. Check the Nonprofit trade journals for any mentions and for industry trends:
Search by entering your nonprofit's name in the keyword search to find articles that mention your desired organization

  6. Check the Web
