What is GIS?

GIS is a computerized mapping system that enables the user to visualize statistical information about St. Charles County on a map. It allows for different types of information to be combined electronically into one customized map.

The St. Charles City-County Library District Geographical Information System is located at the Middendorf-Kredell Library, 2750 Hwy. K, O'Fallon, Mo. Customers will need to make an appointment with the GIS/Government Documents Librarian Anna Sylvan to use the GIS. For an appointment call (636) 978-7997.

How is it used?

A business person wanting to open a dry cleaning business in St. Charles County could request a search which would include information on density of population, age, income level, & existing dry cleaning businesses. All of this information would be layered and displayed on one St. Charles County map with each type of information being represented in a different color. This GIS is small and micro-business friendly. It gives small business owners a service they could otherwise never afford.

What data is available?

St. Charles County GIS database structure:

Demographic Data - general population, age, education & employment, households, housing units, income by family, income by households, race

Physical Data - floodplain, hydrography, landuse, municipal database, road network, satellite image, soils, topography

County Zoning - Zoning Map

County Summary - agricultural highlights, farm highlights, farm income & expenses, demographic summary, demographic trend, migration trend, economic profile, environmental profile

Business - St. Charles County 1998 Business Database

Demographic data is based on the 1990 Census information. The Business database was purchased and will be updated annually. All other information is as current as is available in a digitized format. With the exception of the Business database, all other information was assembled, converted to the correct format and donated to the Library District by the Center for Agricultural, Resource and Environmental Systems, at the University of Missouri Columbia. The software to run the GIS was developed and donated to the District by Environmental Systems Research Institute.

How is information displayed?

Information is displayed on a map of St. Charles County. Data can be requested for all of St. Charles County, or for more specific areas of the County. Information from any of the databases can be overlaid on one map. Different types of information are displayed in different colors. The color allows the user to easily distinguish between different types of data. Color or black & white maps can be printed for a small fee.

Why is this system unique?

This system allows for customized searching, so results can be tailored to fit the information needs of each person. No other GIS in the area is capable of providing such specialized information. Other GIS's do exist locally but only offer preset information, which may or may not be everything the customer needs. Customers cannot get this type of specialized information anywhere else in St. Louis.
