READER'S ADVISORY-Ask us about the good books!
Each branch has specially trained children's services staff who is very familiar with children's materials and is there to help children, parents and others working with children to find interesting reading material. Please ask for recommended mystery, sport, fantasy and other genres of books, books with particular themes, books that children will like, books with appropriate reading levels etc. We are here to help. Free booklists with recommended titles on special topics or for specific ages are available. Many fiction books are indexed by subject in the online catalog as well.

INFORMATION-Your answer place!
The Children's collection includes Reference (JR) material that is used for research in the library. The Reference collection also includes resources about children's literature and using books with children. Much of the non-fiction collection addresses the personal interests and curiosity of children as well as provides help with school assignments. The public library supplements what is available in school libraries. The children's non-fiction collection is a good source of information for adults too! Please ask us for help if you cannot find the information you need.

PROGRAMS-Let's get together!
A wide variety of programs are offered for children ages 1 to 12. Programming is designed to:
•Spark an interest in books and reading
•Discover the depth of information available on a multitude of topics
•Make the library a familiar, desirable place to visit
•Provide information
•Develop reading readiness skills
•Discover the library as a place to satisfy curiosity or learn about new things
•Provide an opportunity for appropriate group interaction
•Enhance development of independence
•Develop a lifelong reading habit.

Story hours, time for twos, lapsits, preschool crafts, make-it-stations, speakers, reading programs, movies, puppet shows, drama presentations, storytelling, etc. are all typical types of programs available at the library. Programs are planned on a quarterly basis and published in a calendar of events for children. Many programs require registration because of space limitations or special activities that cannot be provided for large groups. Although parents are not required to stay at the library while their children are attending programs, it is strongly suggested that parents be readily available in case of emergency. Prompt arrival for programs is also greatly appreciated. After a program, children are not allowed to leave the program area without an adult. Many programs are designed for specific age groups and due to space limitations and/or the nature of the projects, children of younger or older ages are not allowed to attend programs where an age is specified.

USING THE LIBRARY-A few reminders!
New library cards are free, but a parent or guardian signature is needed for anyone under the age of 16. Staff will be glad to show school age children how to use the computer catalog. It is also important to remember that the library is a public building, and for safety reasons, children should not be left alone or unsupervised. The library staff is not responsible for unsupervised children.
